Financial Readiness Starts with Education in the Central Valley
A familiar conversation we have with many of our Noble Credit Union members around this time of year is, “I’m finally ready to get serious about my finances and save more money!” The intentions are good, but getting started can be overwhelming.
Many Americans report stress when it comes to managing their finances, and that pressure is felt just as strongly here in the Fresno area. Simply facing your fears is an essential first step and often the hardest. To help take away some of the anxiety around money management, let’s start with talking about financial readiness.
Financial readiness for credit union members means being able to manage your personal finances, meet your financial obligations, and ultimately weather unexpected expenses. But being financially ready doesn’t happen overnight and it looks different for everyone. Education is a large component to getting there. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more likely you are to make better financial decisions.
A great place to start is by getting a clear picture of your income and expenses (recurring payments and outstanding debts). Many feel the pressure to “get it right” financially, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach so you have to assess your unique situation to come up with a plan for saving in the future.
Personal Finances Are Personal
Tracking fixed monthly expenses (home mortgages payments, auto loans payments, utilities, subscriptions, insurance and other recurring costs), along with tracking your income, is the foundation to setting attainable financial goals. Categorizing these expenses helps generate an accurate financial picture.
This approach can help you spot spending habits, find areas where you have more control, and show where you are spending more than expected. It even uncovers insights that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Things to keep an eye out for that can have a long term pay-off include:
- Keeping track of “little things” like small subscription fees
- Identifying expenses that no longer reflect current priorities
- Noticing frequent, low-cost purchases that add up over time
Once you have visibility into where and how often your money is being spent, you can start creating a budget that fits your life – but don’t forget to build in some wiggle-room. Flexibility is key, because life always has a way of surprising us with unexpected expenses (medical bills, home repairs, car repairs, etc.).
Financial Budgeting Begins
Once you understand your personal finances, changes can be implemented that further your financial goals. Small changes over time matter more than big changes all made at once, and often feel easier to manage. This goal isn’t about eliminating enjoyment or cut spending to the bare minimum, but rather to make intentional, informed decisions.
Try creating two clear groups in your budget – necessary versus discretionary expenditures. This makes it easier to adjust when needed and ensures your budget is sustainable over time. As income and priorities change, your budget should evolve too. Budgeting works best when it’s realistic and something you can comfortably sustain long-term.
Whether your current goal is just to get started with a budget, to start saving money for the future, or maybe even applying for an auto loan, Noble credit union members can find online tools helpful when planning their finances.
